The problem of security for the health of both people and the environment in the production and operation of periclase-carbon products, are trying to solve in various ways, but so far without success. Phenolic, tar and pitches of different origin used in the manufacture of products, to minimize without loss of performance properties, still fails.

As the ligaments, in any case, should be a component that may not cause the magnesium oxide to hydration not only at high temperatures but also under natural conditions. In addition, the binder must be sufficiently plastic and should not contain harmful components and do not form harmful substances in the manufacturing process and service of periclase-carbon molded products. Of course, the binder should provide the required performance properties of products, as these products are exposed to and serve in the most critical locations in steel units where they work in a very harsh temperatures and direct contact with liquid and corrosive slags.

Our decoder consists of intercalated under special conditions graphite and subsequent thermal treatment and the subsequent technological operation, which allows you to use this graphite as a bundle without any additional components. In addition excluded this energy redistribution as heat treatment of molded products.

Properties of finished products with the use of a combination of heat-treated intercalated graphite:

  • the content of graphite (C) adjusted depending on the desired properties in the range of from 5 to 15%

  • limit compressive strength, depending on the graphite content of from 30 to 50 N/mm2

  • open porosity not exceeding 8%

  • apparent density, depending on the density of the filler and the content of graphite from 2.75 to 3.1 g/cm3.

By its very nature, the intercalated graphite is more resistant to high temperature oxidation than ordinary, so we can assume that when operating such a quality material as lacoustics and metallabstudios will be higher than that of moulded products to the traditional bundles.

Initially, this work was our attention and suggested finding ways for a possible expansion of the boundaries of application of intercalated graphite. However, the use of this type of graphite as a binder and replace them with phenolic resins, organic liquids and plasticizers, allows you to see the prospects of intercalated graphite as one of the important components in the manufacturing process of refractories. This is true not only of periclase-carbon products, but also corundum and spinel containing products.
